Picnic, 2005, video, 3:20

The video focuses on details of an old snapshot. The setting: a smiling woman, a central male figure and a little boy in the background. A sporadic voice-over, additional sounds and rhythmic montage blur the distinction between integrity and manipulation. On the barrel of a rifle appears the word “slikar”* – the code of this video.

Igor makes videos. He used to be a painter. And in Kolin, he is exhibiting photographs. In essence the main reason that I”ve brought Igor to Funke’s Kolin is his short film, Picnic. Recollections of family are a crucial part of our existence. Hidden in that albeit unconscious are values and traditions of previous generations. Visually, at issue is a rough document. Without explication, the video, Picnic comes across like a detective novel.

For Funke’s Kolin, Igor worked with specific themes; he sought out traces of stories from the archives of one family.
